Vonnen’s Shadow Drive represents a new era in automotive performance – a fully integrated performance hybrid system designed to bring modern electrified power to both classic and contemporary Porsche models.
Inspired by the hybrid technology found in supercars such as the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, and McLaren P1, Shadow Drive delivers substantial gains in performance and efficiency while preserving the visceral engagement of a true driver’s car. The system was engineered to integrate seamlessly into existing vehicles, maintaining the sound, feel and character enthusiasts love while adding modern hybrid power in a discreet, emissions-friendly package.
The first production example, known internally as V1, was built on the platform of a 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera (991), and transformed from a 350-horsepower sports car into a 500-horsepower hybrid performance machine. Widely praised by automotive media for its factory-like refinement, V1 demonstrated that electrified performance could enhance the driving experience, while maintaining the car’s iconic characteristics. The power delivery has been described as feeling like “two extra cylinders grafted on,” with acceleration that remained smooth, linear and perfectly integrated into the chassis and drivetrain.
Remarkably, the vehicle retained its stock suspension, brakes and bodywork, underscoring how naturally Shadow Drive complements the original engineering.
At the core of the system is a motor-generator that replaces the factory flywheel, paired with a compact lithium-ion battery and an intelligent control system that works alongside the vehicle’s original ECU without altering it. The result is a lightweight, highly adaptable hybrid solution that fits within existing drivetrains while remaining visually discreet. With Shadow Drive, Vonnen has established a groundbreaking new category in automotive performance – one that combines the classic 911 rear-engine characteristics with modern hybrid assist technology.
