1988 Porsche 911 Hybrid Daily Driver in Santa Clara, CA

The legendary air-cooled Porsche 911 has been fully reimagined with hybrid performance thanks to Vonnen’s Shadow Drive system.

Retaining the analog driving feel, visceral feedback, and unmistakable character that have made these vintage air-cooled cars icons, the upgrade transforms acceleration and overall performance without compromising the classic experience. The resulting Vonnen V2 delivers a seamless fusion of tradition and modern technology, offering exhilarating speed while remaining an otherwise reliable daily driver.

The transformation centers on a custom-designed axial flux electric motor, integrated between the engine and the G50 manual transmission. Replacing the flywheel, it adds 120 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque in its air-cooled format, bringing this 1988 911 from 215 HP and 195 lb-ft to 335 HP and 315 lb-ft. The motor also functions as a generator, enabling regenerative braking and efficient energy recapture without altering the car’s analog driving dynamics.

The Shadow Drive motor, inverter and sensors are cleverly integrated to monitor throttle, brake, and other inputs in real time, ensuring that electric assistance is applied exactly when needed. The result is an air-cooled 911 that honors its legendary past while offering the performance, efficiency, and responsiveness expected of a modern sports car.
